Application Specific Fibre Optic Modem Information Guide

KBC’s ASFOM (Application Specific Fibre Optic Modem) range offers integrators and end users true flexibility and choice. Rather than having to change a system specification to accommodate the limitations of the transmission equipment, ASFOM gives you a unique opportunity to develop a transmission system that meets your own requirements. Instead of being limited by the set increments of channels and the mix of signal types offered by most manufacturers, the ASFOM range allows analog video, data, analog audio, contact closure, telephone, Ethernet, DVI, SDI and USB to be combined in the exact quantity and order that is needed. Solutions can be as simple as a single contact closure link or extend to a system requiring 128 real time video signals - all supported on a single fibre. Both point-to-point and bus topologies can be configured.

ASFOM Point-to-Point Transmission
ASFOM Point-to-Point Transmission

The KBC ASFOM range allows you to effectively design your own product to meet your own specification. ASFOM products support: analog video, data, analog audio, contact closure, telephone and Ethernet in various permutations to meet your exact requirements. All signals are digitized providing excellent quality and guaranteed performance throughout the system. Video is offered with either 8 or 10 bit digital resolution without compression, providing real-time video images across the link. ASFOM products can be configured for multimode or singlemode operation and are available in either two or single fibre formats. Based on the channel requirements and signal mix, the ASFOM will utilise single wavelength, WDM or CWDM technology. The CWDM optics enable up to 128 real-time video signals in a single fibre or various mixtures of signal type in large quantities. Depending on system requirements, units are available in wall-mount, 1U or 2U 19” rack or 4U chassis card for integration within the FR4 chassis.

ASFOM Bus Transmission System
ASFOM Bus Transmission System

The KBC ASFOM range allows optical bus systems to be configured simply and easily. Utilizing CWDM (Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexer) technology, up to 16 optical wavelengths can be combined in a single fibre to create an add/drop bus arrangement. Each transmitter module must have a corresponding receiver module. In effect, the system is 16 individual point-to-point links integrated via the CWDM. As with all ASFOM products, the system provides a path for analog video, data, analog audio, contact closure, telephone and Ethernet signals. All signals are digitized providing excellent quality and guaranteed performance throughout the system. Video is offered with either 8 or 10 bit digital resolution without compression, providing real-time video images across the network.

ASFOM Redundant Systems Information Guide
ASFOM Redundant Systems Information Guide
When redundancy is required in a communication system, the ASFOM range can be configured to provide back up links on fibre for both point-to-point and bus systems. Redundancy is created by offering two independent paths for the optical signal – the primary and the secondary path. Under normal operation, the primary path is used; in the event of a failure, the system switches to the secondary path. Most of KBC’s competitors’ solutions will transmit the signals along both paths by splitting the optical signals using some form of optical switch at the receive end to select between the primary and secondary rather than switching the transmit end. The system will switch to the secondary side when an issue is detected in the primary and remain in this position until the primary issue is rectified, at which point it will switch back to the primary.

ASFOM Redundant Point-to-Point or Bus Transmission Systems
ASFOM Redundant Point-to-Point or Bus Transmission Systems

The ASFOM range can be configured to provide backup links for both point-to-point and bus systems. Redundancy is created by offering two independent paths for the optical signal – the primary and the secondary path. Under normal operation, the primary path is used; in the event of a failure, the receive end of the link takes the lost information from the secondary path. To further increase the resilience to failure, the unique KBC solution splits the electrical signal before transmitting it through dual identical transmit and receive optics. This means that an optical component failure will not cause a system failure. In a system that uses optical splitting, an optical failure in the transmitter or receiver will result in a system failure as there is only one set of optics. Electrical splitting also removes the need for passive optical splitters / couplers at each remote position and an optical switch at the receiver end, removing single points of failure and increasing the usable optical budget in the system. Alarm outputs, corresponding to every used optical wavelength are provided at the head end / central location unit. When an optical path is lost, be that optical component failure or loss of link continuity, the alarm output changes state to indicate the failure. By monitoring both the primary and secondary paths, failures in links that are not currently being used are still identified and can be rectified quickly. Depending on system requirements, units are available in 1U or 2U 19” rack or 4U chassis card for integration within the FR4 chassis.
